MOST AMERICANS POSITIVE ABOUT RELATIONS WITH SOUTH KOREA

Eight in 10 Americans consider their country’s relations with South Korea important. “American opinion of South Korea is largely positive. Majorities say U.S.-ROK relations are important and see South Korea as a reliable partner,” The Chicago Council on Global Affairs (CCGA), a U.S. foreign affairs and security think tank, said in a report on Oct. 13.
The report also says, “Perhaps the most significant signal of American backing for the bilateral relationship is that U.S. public support for the use of U.S. forces to defend South Korea in the event of a North Korean attack is at an all-time high.”
For this report, the CCGA conducted a survey of 2,034 American adults from May 25 to June 17. In the survey, 83 percent of respondents agreed that the U.S. relations with South Korea are important. And 62 percent supported “South Korea exerting strong leadership in world affairs.”
Furthermore, 47 percent answered affirmatively, when asked if the United States should send ground forces to South Korea in the event of an attack from North Korea.
As for deeming South Korea as a reliable partner, the respondents pointed to the bilateral security alliance, trade ties, and close cultural relations between the two countries. Meanwhile, 55 percent regarded North Korea’s development of nuclear weapons as the biggest threat to Washington-Seoul relations. However, respondents were evenly divided on how to solve the North Korean nuclear issue, with some supporting a diplomatic solution, while others support economic sanctions.

미국의 외교·안보 싱크탱크인 시카고국제문제협의회는 10월13일 발표한 보고서에서 말했다.
보고서는 또한 밝힌다 “아마도 한미 관계를 미국이 지지하는 가장 중요한 단서는
북한의 공격 시 한국을 방어하기 위해 미군을 투입하는데 대한 일반 미국인들의 지지가 사상 최고에 달했다는 점이다”라고.
